Veterans Stand Down event allows veterans to connect with services, other veterans

Appeal-Democrat - 7/30/2018

July 30--For a few days next month, part of Beckwourth Riverfront Park will transform into a canvas tent-filled space where as many as 1,000 veterans and their family members will be able to connect with a variety of services and other veterans.

The annual Yuba Sutter Veterans Stand Down is scheduled for Aug. 23 -- 25 at Cotton Rosser Pavilion.

"As always, we encourage veterans to come down and look around, even if they don't think they qualify," said Susan Downing, with the Yuba Sutter Veterans Stand Down. "They can come and connect with different government agencies and organizations that will find a way to help them and they can connect with other veterans."

Downing said even if a veteran is lacking the proper identification, there are people at the event who can help.

"If people show up and don't have their proper identification, we still bring them in and try to verify their veteran status with the Veterans Affairs office," she said.

She said volunteers, many from Beale Air Force Base, are getting organized ahead of time.

"We're doing it a little different this year, where we're working with volunteers from the base and other people who are helping by organizing food and other supplies at the warehouse before the event," she said. "We're asking volunteers to come to an orientation before the stand down so that things run more smoothly."

She said there will be two volunteer orientation days at the Yuba Sutter Veterans Stand Down office in Marysville -- one on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m. and another on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 6 p.m.

"This annual event plays a critical role in helping the homeless veterans," Downing said. "However, this event is open to all veterans including active duty personnel and their families."

"Personnel from the Veterans Administration and local service providers are on hand to provide a variety of services."

Last year's Yuba Sutter Veterans Stand Down provided services to more than 1,000 veterans and their family members with hundreds of volunteers and professionals donating their time and expertise to make the event happen.
