St. Louis County hires new veterans service director

Duluth News-Tribune - 7/25/2018

July 25--Mjr. Tedd Ells of the Minnesota Army National Guard has been hired to lead St. Louis County's Veterans Service Office.

The St. Louis County Board on Tuesday appointed Ells of Proctor as the Veterans Service Office director beginning Monday. He'll oversee a staff of eight people working in the county's four Veterans Service Offices in Duluth, Hibbing, Virginia and Ely that serve more than 18,000 veterans in the county. He succeeds Sherry Rodriguez, who retired earlier this summer as the director.

County Administrator Kevin Gray said the county board is confident that Ells will serve the veteran community well, which is a priority for the county.

"Tedd impressed us on many levels -- his demonstrated leadership skills, his extensive career spanning multiple branches of the military, and his commitment to serve his fellow veterans," Gray said in a statement.

Ells began his military career in the U.S. Navy as an avionics technician. After a break in service, he enlisted as a biomedical equipment specialist in the 148th Fighter Wing of the Minnesota Air National Guard, where he was recognized as the Medical Services Airman of the Year in 2005 for his expertise as a response member during Hurricane Katrina. He currently serves in the Minnesota Army National Guard as company commander for the 204th Medical Company Area Support, based in Cottage Grove. He has deployed twice overseas for Operation Deny Flight with the Navy and Operation Enduring Freedom with the Army National Guard.

He holds two master's degrees in organizational behavior and business administration from the College of St. Scholastica.
