Charity horse ride Jan. 14

The third annual Ride for Hope Reins will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, at Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Park, 2317 Creek Shore Trail, New Smyrna Beach.

Participants may ride their own horse or use one of Marcody Ranch's horses. Participants pay $40 to ride their own horses or $75 with horse rental.

All proceeds benefit Hope Reins.

The Father Charles Waters Post 1962 of the Catholic War Veterans is looking for speakers and entertainers for its meetings the last Monday of the month at 1920 Mason Ave.Emery L. Bennet Veterans Nursing Home.

Fundraiser planned to benefit IDignity Volusia

IDignity Volusia will host a pancake breakfast fundraiser at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Applebee's, 1390 Dunlawton Ave., Port Orange.

Tickets are $7 for a meal with pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice.

Proceeds benefit IDignity Volusia, a non-profit, volunteer organization that helps obtain Florida identification cards and licenses, birth certificates, Social Security cards, replacement immigration records and other documents.

The next client event will be Friday, Jan. 26, at Port Orange Presbyterian Church, 4662 Clyde Morris Blvd. Intake is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and individuals are served on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested in attending are encouraged to arrive early as capacity is limited.

Adults can pick up new computer skills during free classes at the Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle.

Annual Empty Bowls and Silent Auction

The 10th Annual Empty Bowls Event a benefit to help Halifax Urban Ministries overcome hunger in Volusia Co., will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Bethune Cookman'sCenter for Civic Engagement located at 740 W. International Speedway Blvd.

Library friends seek left over greeting cards

The Friends of the Port Orange Library are collecting new Christmas cards, including the envelopes.

Do not go out and buy cards just to donate, the Friends are only asking for any extra cards. They are trying to reduce, reuse and recycle. Cards for other occasions are welcome, too. Cards are cut down into bookmarks used to make gift boxes and for various craft projects.

They can also use all of those cards and stickers sent from various organizations. Donated cards can be left at the Circulation Desk at the library at City Center.

Realtors playing poker for ?the cause'

The Daytona Beach Area Association of Realtors' Sold 4 the Cause will host its inaurugal Texas Hold ?em Tournament from 5:10 to 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at Daytona Beach Racing & Card Club, 960 S. Williamson Blvd., Daytona Beach.

The event is presented by Lynn Byrne of 1st Florida Realty Lynn Byrne, Susan Summers of Century 21 Sun-dance Realty and the card club.

Cocktail hour and hor d'oeuvres begin at 5:10 p.m. Cards in the air at 6:10 p.m.

Poker spectators tickets are $25. Early player registration is $95 through Jan. 15. Player registration is $125. Player seats and sponsorships are available.

County plans Explore Volusia programs

Learn about Volusia County's conservation lands and land management practices during free Explore Volusia programs in January.

?Hickory Bluff Preserve paddle: 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12. Explore the ecosystems of the St. Johns River during a leisurely paddling trip. Bring a canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard along with a life preserver and whistle. Meet at 598 Guise Road, Osteen.

?Beach cleanup: 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13. Start the new year right by cleaning the beach at Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park. Bring a bucket and gloves. All ages are welcome. ?Eco-buggy tour: 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17. Learn about land management practices while riding through the diverse ecosystem of the 1,400-acre Wire-grass Prairie Preserve, which is almost entirely in the St. Johns River valley. Meet at 1751 Lopez Road, Osteen. Do not use a GPS to find the location.

?Guided hike of Lake Ashby Park: 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18. Take a walk through cypress swamp on Lake Ashby's boardwalk. Participants will learn about the importance of swamp habitats while enjoying the beauty of nature. Meet at 4150 Boy Scout Camp Road, New Smyrna Beach.

Participants should bring water and insect repellent. They should wear comfortable clothes and hiking or walking shoes.

Former state representative declares for Congress

Former State Rep. Fred Costello has declared his campaign for the Sixth Congressional District of Florida.

Mr. Costello, who also served as mayor of Ormond Beach for eight years, announced his candidacy at Rockefeller Park, which he led the way as mayor in restoring the park adjacent to The Casements.

He has been a dentist in Ormond Beach for many years and served in the U.S. Air Force.

The Sixth District includes Volusia and Flagler counties and part of St. Johns and Lake counties.
