Wooster Emblem Club

Wooster Emblem Club No. 374 met Nov. 28 at the Wooster Elks Lodge.

The club voted $150 to the Elks Cerebral Palsy project, adopted two families for Christmas from Wayne County Job & Family Services, adopted a local military veteran, and donated $300 to Wooster Hope Center to help replenish supplies.

Americanism activities for November included members visiting the Oasis Group Home serving a meatloaf lunch; after lunch at the Elks, members clipped and sorted 30,000 coupons that were sent to two overseas military bases; on Veterans Day members passed out flag lapel pins on a “Dear American Hero” card of appreciation at the program at the fairgrounds and several nursing homes; members provided Thanksgiving goody bags and assisted the Elks with their Veterans Day dinner for the Hilltop Villa Veterans.

The Literacy Committee reported 350 bookmarks were given to Cornerstone Elementary and the Wayne County Library. The club voted to provide prizes to the students at The Village Network school for their winter holiday party. Community Service Chairman Barb Flickinger announced she had enough volunteers to ring bells for the Salvation ArmyDec. 5 and the club would be providing punch and cookies following the Ida School Christmas program Dec. 13.

The annual Christmas lunch for the Oasis Group Home was held Dec. 1 and a Christmas dinner was held Dec. 4 for the Hilltop Villa Veterans Rehabilitation Facility. Each resident was given a monetary gift along with a handmade pillowcase made by long-time member Vera Rouhier, new pillows, bath towels and washcloths, and personal items.

Club Christmas dinner was Dec. 12 at the Elks with the Secret Sister Gift Exchange and entertainment following. Lunch will be at The Wooster InnDec. 14 at 11:30 a.m. with coupon clipping to follow at the Elks.

Next club meeting will be Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.

Orrville Exchange Club

David Hargrave, program supervisor of day treatment, mentoring and community relations at Village Network, gave a program Dec. 7 to Exchange Club on “Youth Mentoring.” He was introduced by Steve Yoder, who arranged the program.

Hargrave was with Christian Children’s Home of Ohio from 2002-2013 and then became a director of O’Huddle, a mentoring program that was in Wooster and Orrville schools.

Hargrave stressed having positive adult relationships mentoring youth, showing love helps build bright futures for youth and their families. He said working one on one with youth, giving them 30-50 minutes of your time as a youth mentor works.

Hargrave said volunteers are always needed. He said volunteers can assist with events, mentoring, projects or through donations.

In business, James Clymer announced Exchange Club second annual Super Bingo fundraiser event will be Jan. 27 at the American Legion in Orrville. Admission of $50 includes meal, 20 games of bingo and prizes totaling over $1,500. For tickets, call Lisa Reusser at 330-683-2888.

James Davis gave a blessing for his 67 years of marriage to Donna Dale Davis.

Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge played Dec. 8 with an average score of 36. Pairs above average were: Gary Miller, Roger Buchholz, 46; Pete Bowen, Judi Mitten, 42; Gwen Gerber, Cheryl Backstrom, 41; Larry Swaney, Kathy Slosman, 39; Bill Smith, Walt Kearney, 36.50.
