NAMI Maryville sponsoring open house Oct. 4

The Daily Times - 9/29/2017

In observance of Mental Illness Awareness Week which is Oct. 1–7, NAMI Maryville is sponsoring an open house from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4 at New Providence Presbyterian Church. A light lunch will be offered.

NAMI Maryville steering committee members and NAMI East Tennessee Regional Director Judi Evans will be present.

Established by National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in 1990, the first week of October each year is MIAW across the country, a time to fight the stigma of mental illness, provide support, educate the public, and advocate for equal care. Learn more about Mental Illness Awareness Week at www.nami.org/miaw.

In addition to MIAW, the StigmaFree campaign is NAMI’s effort to end stigma and create hope for those affected by mental illness. Through powerful words and actions, we can shift the social and systemic barriers for those living with mental health conditions. To take the #StigmaFree pledge, visit www.nami.org/stigmafree. NAMI offers information about mental illness conditions, symptoms and treatment at www.nami.org or through its HelpLine at 800-950-NAMI (6264).

As part of Mental Illness Awareness Week, National Depression Screening Day will be held on Thursday, Oct. 5. Organizations around the world are encouraged to offer free, anonymous questionnaires that can help individuals identify potential signs of depression.
