Post Register - 2/10/2017

A free mental health conference featuring numerous medical experts is being held Saturday in Rexburg.

The conference features presentations on post-traumatic stress disorder, suicide, depression, drug abuse and a host of other subjects. It is being held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Madison High School, 2300 University Blvd.

A full list of presenters and schedule can be found at head-heart.org.

The conference is sponsored by Madison Memorial Hospital, the Behavioral Health Center, Brigham Young University-Idaho and Madison Cares.

A professional track is also offered at the conference at $50 per person. It will benefit clinicians seeking continuing medical education credit.

Madison Memorial spokesman Doug McBride said this is the first time a conference such as this has been organized in Rexburg. McBride said the hope is to create an open dialogue between medical professionals and the public about mental illness .

"The public track is important too for people who have family members who may be struggling and this conference can build up some simple skills to help," McBride said. "I don't know what kind of (public) response we'll get, but it's such an important topic."

Presenters include local doctors, law enforcement, therapists and some individuals with diagnosed mental illnesses.
